국가경찰과 자치경찰의 조직 및 운영에 관한 법률 제30조(경찰서장)

① 경찰서에 경찰서장을 두며, 경찰서장은 경무관, 총경(總警) 또는 경정(警正)으로 보한다.

② 경찰서장은 시ㆍ도경찰청장의 지휘ㆍ감독을 받아 관할구역의 소관 사무를 관장하고 소속 공무원을 지휘ㆍ감독한다.

③ 경찰서장 소속으로 지구대 또는 파출소를 두고, 그 설치기준은 치안수요ㆍ교통ㆍ지리 등 관할구역의 특성을 고려하여 행정안전부령으로 정한다. 다만, 필요한 경우에는 출장소를 둘 수 있다.

④ 시ㆍ도자치경찰위원회는 정기적으로 경찰서장의 자치경찰사무 수행에 관한 평가결과를 경찰청장에게 통보하여야 하며 경찰청장은 이를 반영하여야 한다.
